Course Description

EKG Basics gives you the confidence to capture clean tracings and recognize foundational rhythms—without drowning in jargon. You’ll learn what an EKG measures (depolarization/repolarization), how the conduction system creates the P wave, QRS, and T wave, and why intervals and segments (PR, QRS, QT, ST) matter for patient safety. Lead Placement & Landmarks • Reproducible 12-lead placement using clear landmarks (Einthoven triangle, V1–V6). • Real-patient adaptations: obesity, large breasts, pediatrics, amputations, implanted devices, skin sensitivity. Acquisition Workflow (Quality First) • ID & consent, privacy, skin prep (shave/abrade/dry), electrode placement, cable management. • Device settings: correct speed, gain, and filters; verify calibration. • Safety & infection control throughout. Artifact Troubleshooting • Fast fixes for wandering baseline, somatic tremor, AC interference, and lead reversals. • Checklist mindset to prevent repeats and keep throughput high. Interpretation—Step by Step (Within Scope) • Rate (6-second and large-box), rhythm regularity, interval measurement, morphology cues. • Confident first-pass recognition of: o Normal sinus rhythm and common variants o PACs/PVCs o Atrial fibrillation and flutter o SVT clues o AV blocks (1st, Mobitz I/II, 3rd) o Red-flag ventricular rhythms (VT/VF) needing urgent escalation • Emphasis on scope of practice and SBAR scripts for concise, professional handoffs. Documentation & EHR Workflow • Reason for test, lead set, settings used, artifacts addressed, special considerations. • Clear notes that help providers act quickly and safely. Practice & Assessment • Repetition-based skills labs and timed acquisitions. • Case vignettes and rhythm drills to cement recognition. • Quick-reference pocket cards and room posters. Who Should Enroll • Medical assistants, PCTs, telemetry/ER techs, and allied-health students. Outcomes • Clean acquisitions the first time. • Confident recognition of foundational rhythms and red flags. • Calm, appropriate escalation that helps the team deliver safer, faster, kinder care.
